PLA Unit of the day: Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, Marine Brigade, China Navy

Each China Navy Marine Brigade has an organic Reconnaissance Battalion, they are trained to carry out all-terrain reconnaissance, battlefield surveillance, counter-reconnaissance missions as well as SpOps on bard of PLAN warships.  Since day one, each of the China Navy anti-piracy task force to the Gulf of Aden has been assigned those reconnaissance elements serving both in SpOps and traditional duties of Marines in ship's detachments.

As you can tell, they have two sets of uniforms -- traditional "smurf blue" when they are under their normal chain-of-command.  In that role, their are reserved in supporting their Marine comrades-in-arms by providing timely intelligence to their marine brigade command.   They switch to their "Right Said Fred - ‘I’m Too Sexy" black during a foreign deployment and under the Gulf of Aden task force Command at the CMC, headed by a naval flag officer.

VBSS body armor adopted.

Judging by the photos of PLAN's 9th Task Force to the Gulf and Aden, it seems the PLAN SpOps team has adopted Clear Duty's VBSS body armor.    Also noted from the photo of a fore-gripped Type95, the PLAN is allowing its elites a greater leverage in customizing their gear.

All those adjustments show that the decision to participate in the anti-piracy duties is paying dividends in unexpected ways for the PLAN.

PLAMC testing new VBSS body armor vest for boarding team

Clear Duty VBSS body armor vest is being tested by the PLAMC for boarding party. It's made by a local Chinese private company. VBSS stands for Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure operation.

The CD VBSS is more comfortable and offers quick-release that the standard issued Type 06 body armor lacks. The quick-release is a life saver if a boarding team member fall into the water. All he needed it is just pull the quick-release to remove the vest (which will be loaded down with hard plates, ammo, pistol, comm & other gears) and swim to the surface.

The vest uses Kevlar material and has large SAPI size hard plate pocket in the front and back. --

PLA "art of war"

Of course almost all the art works commissioned by the PLA's Political Deportment are nothing short of cheesy propaganda.  That said, some of them are actually quite good -- take the following set of  photorealistic oil paintings by the 29-year old Zhou Mo depicting the history of the PLA and the PLAAF for example. Not high art per se, but definitely worthy of a spot in a PLA flag officer's back-wall somewhere.  I like'em.

She might be sporting a PLAAF uniform, but she is actually a member of the A&E Civilian Corps.

The 5th PLAN Marine Briagde is here

It just completed its first field deployment drill in minus ten degrees near its home port of Qingdao (here).   The 1st and 2nd PLAN Marine Brigades are home-ported in Zhanjiang, South Sea Fleet.  Since the 5th Marine Briagde is in Qingdao, it is likely under the North Sea Fleet.

"We will have a bigger Navy and Marine Corps" Admiral Liu Xiaojiang

Speaking at the current National People’s Congress session on Sunday,  Admiral Liu Xiaojiang. the former Political Commissar of the PLAN stressed that the PLAN will play an increasingly important role in national defense - for the readers of this blog - with additional Army transfers to the PLAN Marine's Order of battle (中国海军上将证实:海军人员编制舰艇规模将扩大)  .

Long expected, the third PLAN Marine Brigade is now here.

The commission of the third PLAN Marine Brigade should come as no surprise since "with great power comes great Marines".  The current two-Marine Brigade ORBAT simply does not have the manpower to fulfill all those new "historical missions" the PLA high command has planned for them.  The question is really about which PLA ground unit will be transferred to the navy and how soon.

The first PLAN Marine Brigade commissioned on May 1980.  164th Motorized Infantry Division, 41st Army Group Army transferred to the Chinese Marine Corps as the 164th Marine Brigade on July 1998.  This new Marine Brigade is another army transfer, this time from the 77th "Yimeng/沂蒙" Motorized Infantry Brigade, 26th Group Army, Jinan MR/ Northern Theater Command.

The 77th is a proud PLA outfit, commissioned by the CMC on December 1945 and participated in some of the major campaigns during the Chinese Civil War (The Battle of Luannan, the Battle of Laiwu, the Battle of Menglianggu, the Battle of Kaifeng, the Battle of Huaihai, the Battle of the Yangtze River, and the Battle of Shanghai).  It also took part in the Second, Fourth, and Fifth campaigns of the "War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea".

ZTL09 8x8 Wheeled Light Tank to the PLAN Marine??

ZTL09 8x8 Wheeled Light Tanks sporting the now-famous "Blue Smurf" camo were spotted in Sanya City, near the HQ of the PLAN Marine.  Rumor has it that they are now getting those wheeled new toys to increase their mobility for MOOTW and non-amphibious operations.  Time will tell.
